God, Give Me a WEED-LIKE Faith

How many times have we heard the term “child-like faith” when it comes to our relationship with Jesus? To have a heart and mind that comes to Christ expecting like a child; not just thinking but knowing that God, our Father, is not only able but willing to meet all our needs. AND, not just the desires of a child, but a loving Father who knows what I need and when I need it.

But have you ever thought about having “weed-like” faith? My mom has what is essentially a tree-looking weed growing between the house and the garage. Last time I was in Montana, I chopped that thing down to the root, trying to get rid of it completely from the yard (or so I thought).

Well, I noticed the other day in Montana that the weed was almost 2 feet tall again! Its root system is buried along the side of the garage and likely has a wide network pulling nutrients from the ground, surviving my efforts to cut it down. A weed that isn’t bothered by pole saws or electric trimmers, no matter how many times it is cut down.

Then I thought about the strength of my relationship with Jesus. And I thought about the storms of life we all face, and how the devil has attacked us on many fronts, both personally and professionally with CTN. Weeds don’t go away easily. They grow in the toughest, most unlikely places. As long as a weed has roots, it can survive levels of damage that most plants or grass could never withstand. They are stubborn and do not let outside circumstances change the persistence of growth.

What is your root system like with Jesus? What are you doing each day to grow that connection and strengthen your spiritual nutrition? And when storms hit, do you get blown over easily—by the slightest breeze or even a harsh LOOK from the devil? Is your faith “an inch deep and a mile wide?”

The Bible says in Psalms 46:1,

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Notice this verse doesn’t say “…a very present help giving us a way AROUND trouble.” It says IN trouble. That means we can have a “weed-like” faith that’s deeply rooted in Christ and His strength when the storms of life come.

A weed-like faith will grow and actually thrive in any condition.

In all my years, I’ve seen weeds grow in the most unlikely and strange places. Sometimes they grow in sidewalk cracks, around gravel, in poor soil with little sun or water. That’s the kind of faith I want in Christ—faith built from spending time with Jesus that gives me a supernatural security, knowing that my roots in Him will supply everything I need when the storms pass.

While it’s important to trust Jesus like a child, expecting provision and breakthrough, it’s also vital to develop a root system with Him that gives you a weed-like faith. One that endures over time, through all of life’s storms, and encourages others to do the same. Spending time with Jesus shapes our passions and lifts us up when the world tries to define us differently.

Today is the day to grow deep roots beneath the surface—what people can’t see—so that the branches of your life are only part of what the world sees and simply the RESULT of a life well lived with Christ in private.
